Double Deuce is a forgotten neighbourhood, home to some of Boston's toughest gangs. Private detective Spenser and his sidekick, Hawk, have been tasked with cleaning up the area. But before they can begin, Spenser must take on the teenage thugs and gain control of the streets…

Double Deuce A Spenser Mystery The Spenser Series Book 19 eBook Robert B Parker

Kudos to Parker for trying to explore urban gang culture, and doing a credible job. The book is worth reading for that alone.
What I dislike about this book is that it proved to me conclusively that Hawk was a fictional character. I appreciated him more when he might have been real.
This book made me ask myself a bunch of questions to which I don't have answers. What exactly did Hawk do to rise from urban poverty to driving a Jag and being respected as a success story by young black gang members? Hawk is obviously rich. Where did he get all his money? Why don't we know? You don't get rich by beating up deadbeats for loan sharks. Hawk has repeatedly said that he is willing to kill people. Is he a well-paid assassin? Who has he killed? Surely Spencer's friends on the police force have a good idea of the answer, even if they can't prove it. If he was paid to kill, how much was he paid? Why don't we know? Hawk is proudly criminal. Has he ever been arrested? How much time has he spent behind bars?
This book shows Hawk openly cooperating with police. What will happen to his criminal career as a result? Why wasn't that mentioned in the book? What will happen when Hawk is asked to provide his full name when he testifies in court, which he might well have to do after the events in this book? How much credibility will Hawk have as a witness?
I like reading fiction, and I like Robert Parker. I am willing to suspend disbelief when reading fiction -- I want to believe. I read almost all the other Spenser novels before getting around to Double Deuce. I was willing to put up with Hawk's improbability before reading this book, but that only worked because I didn't let myself look where this book forced me to look.

Double Deuce A Spenser Mystery The Spenser Series Book 19 eBook Robert B Parker Reviews

This is a classic. The dialogue between Spenser and Hawk is great and why I bought the Book. Now, when I want some Parker style dialogue I can just take it off my book shelf!
Never read books twice...except, Parker...Hawk - Spenser - impossible mission...it's gonna be, worth your time! This one has it all...don't start it if you're hungry...
This is a good detective story about the ghettos and gang violence. There is lots of sociology attempts to explain how everything happens the way it does. The story is very interesting.
So sorry Robert Parker is no longer with us, but so thankful he was a prolific writer. Love the intrigue, the sarcasm, the banter with Hawk, really good popcorn for the brain.
The reality of the ghetto , gangs and cohabitation are artfully described. Susan still shines as a woman who knows herself but probably became a shrink to find that out. Hawk identifies with the Gang members but still can’t excuse bad acts. Wisdom is the combination of education and experience.
Robert B. Parker created a literary legend with the creation of Spenser, a smartmouth P.I. who barely clings to the legal side of the world to address his clients' needs and the truth.
In "Double Duece" the theme turns more sociological as a street gang is terrorizing a Boston housing project, and the infamous sidekick Hawk is asked to break things up. He asks Spenser to help out, and Parker deftly protrays the gang situation, the lifestyle and pressure of those kids, and actually has Hawk and Spenser in a complicated mess, between just rubbing them out and trying to understand.
Parker never lets you down, and especially for those who love Hawk, this book is a great one for the series. Too bad Parker didn't live long enough to perhaps feature Hawk in his own series. Witty, dangerous and intriguing - all hallmarks of a great author in Robert Parker.
This is a short book--but then most of Parker's are. It isn't the usual double space, but it's only 224 pages long--and a very fast read. It does, however, provide a number of insights into his 3 main characters via the ploy of Susan and Spenser living together as well as Hawk revealing some of his background as a foil to members of ghetto gangs (esp. Major Johnson) and a bit on their relationship with Tony Marcus. Thus, it is an important book for the Spenser series. It also includes quite a bit of social commentary and obvious contrasts between/among "the projects" and their residents, the middle class (i.e. Spenser, Susan, and Pearl--though not called "the wonder dog" herein), the media, and social workers. As usual Parker looks beneath the surface for reasons vs. the usual excuses or protestations of the characters. The plot isn't too much a mystery, but the book includes Parker's usual humor and brisk dialog as well as some deep insights into human nature

Robert B. Parker "Double Deuce" G. P. Putnam NY 1992 hardback
p.99 "There's some sort of inverse ration between social structure and what...honor codes?
p. 100 If there are no things that are important, then things are assigned importance arbitrarily and defended at great risk. Because the risk validates the importance.
p. 119 She smiled the smile that launched a thousand commercials.
p. 145 None of the things people say on talk shows are very useful.
p. 166 (quoting Wallace Stevens) One must have a mind of winter...to behold the nothing that is not there and the nothing that is. p. 169 Hawk could scare Mount Rushmore."

All in all I enjoyed the book and believe Spenser & Parker fans in general would probably agree that it's worth reading.
