True West was written way back in 1979 and play tested thoroughly at gaming convention tournaments for about 5 years before it was copyrighted and trademarked in 1984. That makes True West one of the oldest Wild West Roleplaying games and the most play tested RPG's. Nine character templates are provided within this book, making character creation and game setup quick and easy. Many historically accurate weapons and items have been included within the rules. The system is unique and covers everything you ever wanted to know about the old west. The front and back covers and cover art was created by the famous western artist Tom C. Horn, who is a long time friend and gamer himself. I hope you enjoy True West as much as I have in creating it. Get your game on now!

First off, this is a very small book (only 90 pages) but at a little over ten dollars, you get exactly what you pay for! Only the front and back covers are in color. All the interior art is in black and white. Some of the art seems a bit blurry, as if it was a photocopy of a photocopy. Most of it does a great job of capturing the mood of the old west.Basic attributes are generated by rolling three six sided dice, generating scores from 3-18. Performing basic tasks involved rolling a twenty-sided dice and trying to get a result equal to or less than your score. Other traits can be rolled randomly, like educational level, appearance and race.
Players choose a class, covering almost all archetypes presented in old western stories, with the ability to create more as needed. Each class has attribute requirements, but if you didn't roll high enough to qualify for the class you want to play, you're allowed to raise the deficient score up to the required minimum. Each class grants a selection of starting equipment and skills. Players also have a pool of experience points to spend on Acquired skills and level advancement.
Success or failure with skill usage is based on a percentile roll. Attack rolls use a combination of your attributes along with the "roll under this number" mechanic to determine if your attack was successful. Damage is done against your hit points.
There's a healthy section of equipment, goods, services and weapons to choose from, along with pricing and average incomes for the era. The last section includes a small number of animals your might encounter in the wild, as yes, horses.
All-in-all, it looks just like what it says it is, a simple old west game. There are some others that have deeper mechanics as well as setting information, but if you just want a nice, simple game mechanic to run a story with, this will do ya just fine, cowboy.
I gave this book 4 stars, because it is exactly what it says it is; a no-frills old west role playing game. If I were to compare it to other games though it would probably only get three stars because, let's face it, it's very simple with no real setting information, very simple mechanics and decent, but not awe-inspiring art.
If all you want is a beer and pretzels RPG, you've found it- but look elsewhere if you want a deeper experience.
